Materials

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground lamb or beef
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 eggplant, sliced into 1/4-inch rounds
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Fabrication

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onion is soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the ground lamb or beef, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper to the saucepan and cook until the meat is browned, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the tomatoes and tomato paste to the saucepan and stir to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the eggplant slices and cook until they are tender and lightly browned on both sides, about 5 minutes per side.
  6. In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until the mixture is smooth and bubbly, about 1 minute.
  7. Slowly add the milk to the saucepan, whisking constantly, until the mixture is smooth and thickened, about 5 minutes. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese.
  8. Spread half of the meat mixture in the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Arrange the eggplant slices on top of the meat mixture, then spread the remaining meat mixture on top of the eggplant. Pour the cheese sauce over the top of the meat mixture.
  9. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the cheese sauce. Bake the moussaka in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbly.
  10. Remove the moussaka from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
